Verdict

Linear is purpose-built for software teams: issues, cycles, projects and triage that move at keyboard speed, now with AI agents and MCP access on every plan. It is not trying to be your company wiki, and the free tier’s 250-issue cap means real teams will pay.

Get it if

You run a product or engineering team and want planning, triage and releases in one fast tool.

Skip it if

You need a general-purpose project tool for non-technical teams, or you’ll outgrow 250 issues on a free plan.

Overview

Founded in 2019, Linear says more than 40,000 companies use it, and TechCrunch reported its $82M Series C at a $1.25B valuation in June 2025. It now pitches itself as “the system for product development”: issues, projects, cycles and initiatives, plus triage, Insights analytics and release pipelines.

The agent platform — Linear Agent, MCP access and coding sessions — is available on every plan, including Free. Free allows unlimited members but caps you at 2 teams and 250 issues; Basic is $10/user/month billed yearly, and Business ($16 yearly) adds private teams, Triage Intelligence and Linear Asks intake from Slack and email.

There’s no in-depth independent review we could cite, so our assessment leans on official plan limits and Zapier’s guidance on automating Linear, which positions it squarely at software teams.
